Exhaust temperature sensors handle the task of measuring your engine’s temperature. While modern engines have other temperature gauges in key areas, no other sensors endure the harsh conditions of your engine's exhaust like these do.
So-called "exhaust gas temperature sensors" provide the immediate temperature data the engine's computer requires to manage performance and safety simultaneously.
When exhaust temperatures run too high, systems like air compression (in turbocharged engines) and fuel injection volumes can be adjusted in real time to cool things down. These sensors are also vital for optimizing diesel particulate filter performance.
As temperature data is fed to a diesel engine's computer, intake and injection parameters are adjusted to maintain an optimal regeneration ratio.
In other words, reducing emissions and soot takes priority over raw power, preventing black smoke from billowing out of your vehicle's exhaust. This process happens automatically, thanks to the diesel particulate filter (DPF) sensor.
If your engine uses a sensor that increases resistance when temperatures rise, it’s a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) sensor.
You'll need this type if a replacement is necessary, as the alternative—the negative temperature coefficient (NTC) sensor—works the opposite way, with resistance increasing as temperatures decrease.
When these sensors start to break down, they expose the rest of the exhaust system and other engine internals to potential failure. The engine's computer requires accurate temperature readings to coordinate fuel injection and air compression ratios. Bad data leads to bad results.
Like all electronic components, these sensors can fail due to the harsh conditions on the road. Excessive heat or contaminants can impair the ability to accurately detect temperature, leading to incorrect readings that could harm your engine.
Even vibration can eventually put these sensors out of commission. To avoid the knock-on effects of a sudden failure, test them regularly to ensure they’re getting accurate readings.
You can conduct a test with a suitable diagnostic tool and a separate infrared temperature gauge. Compare the readings you get from each with the engine running to determine whether or not a replacement is warranted.
If you notice discrepancies between your sensor's readings and a separate thermometer, along with issues like poor fuel efficiency or regeneration problems, it might be wise to replace the sensor.
